One of These Things Is Not Like the Others

My husband and our Tabbycat, Dexter, like to play "chase the floofy rattly mouse" up and down the front steps. Once in a while, they lose a mouse, and I am appointed to go on mouse patrol to retrieve the errant creature, such that the games may begin again.

On this evening, I did find the mouse, but only after completely dismantling the shoe rack by the front door. The mouse was hiding under a shoe on the very bottom level. Sneaky little thing! I then cleaned up the dust and dirt and put all the shoes and boots back on the rack.

One of these things in this photo is NOT like the others! There to the left is a favorite Danner hiking boot, and to the right, my very favorite boot of all, a rough and tumble Vasque that is the best backpacking boot I've ever owned. It's seen HEAVY wear and I sure will miss it when it's gone.

But between them sits Dexter, making a heartfelt plea that an empty spot should be left right in the middle of everything, so that the cat might sit there whenever he wishes. Note the clean, white paws, neatly tucked together; and also, the gaze looking upwards in hopes that my husband might toss him a treat or two. :-)

The song to accompany this image is a favorite of mine. An old office-mate (and dear friend) and I used to recite its lyrics to each other. At the end of each work day, I'd walk to her office to escort my friend out, and I'd say these words to her, "Are you ready, Boots? Start walkin'!"  Here is Nancy Sinatra, with These Boots Are Made for Walkin'.
