Smokey

This morning the air was filled with smoke. It came on the nor’wester from a big fire in the Waimakariri Gorge on the other side of the Torlesse Range. Apparently there were nine water dumping helicopters and a plane used to fight the fire close to the Broken River rail bridge. The smoke ebbed and flowed all day as the nor’wester hampered efforts to put the fire out. The last I heard was that it was still not completely contained. The area is isolated and on public land.
