The Burnley Embankment

On the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Burnley rather than take a long detour, following the contours around the valley, it was decided to build an embankment, almost a mile long and up to sixty feet high, straight across to the opposite hillside. The Burnley Embankment is regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of Britain's waterways. While not being as dramatic or daring as some of the other "wonders" it is nevertheless a huge and impressive structure
