Emerging....

.. a cicada emerges from its exoskeleton.  Having lived underground for at least the past three years this adult will live for another two to four weeks during which time it will mate and the next life cycle will have begun. The nymph skin splits at the back of the thorax (extra 1) and the adult emerges (extra 2) Judging by the number of newly emerged adults I saw this morning, a wonderful sound of summer is about to get even louder in the coming days.
