What a lovely day:-

to Finish the Job (3)

Michele, seen here, has finished cleaning this oil painting by James Charles (1851-1906)  The picture has been very lightly varnished and the frame slightly restored.

There is a very indistinct label on the reverse of the frame.  We have spent a great deal of time trying to decipher what it says.  The best we can do is:

"Freeston Farm
by
James Charles
Mrs Harry Gantry"

James Charles lived in South Harting and Bosham, West Sussex.  There is a possibility therefore that this picture was painted in the area.  The picture was purchased at auction and as part of my attempts to discover its provenance, I write to the previous owner via the auctioneer.

I still await a reply.....
