Obsolescence

I spent the morning with an accountant at the Bush. A large, friendly man, he explained how software was taking over the traditional bookkeeping activities, forcing accountants to concentrate on giving advice - if only people would ask.

Fencing has moved on too. The fields around here contain many remnants from an era when metal fence posts were clearly seen as the future. None that I can think of are still in use. They slowly rust away, a reminder not only that some innovation fails to deliver, but also that we are quite capable of ignoring evidence of our own folly.

There's no doubt, however, that there can be beauty in form despite an obsolescence of function.
