My mother taught me the basics of cryptic crosswords when I was a teenager. Then in the year I turned 40 one of my resolutions was to learn how to do them properly - with mixed results. (I've stuck with the Telegraph setters even though the paper itself has turned into a pathetic imitation of the Daily Mail.)
