horns of wilmington's cow

Fluttery

I learned, from a book bought today called 'Tweet of the Day', based on the short, regular Radio 4 segment, that Goldcrests were considered too small to be possibly able to migrate from Scandinavia (as they do). As they arrived around the same time as Woodcock there was a belief* that the Goldcrests were carried on the backs of the waders, and so were known as 'Woodcock Pilots' (hence one of the extras, the other extra just to show off that gold crest, even with the awful light for photos).

Book was bought from the shop at the Restoration Yard in Dalkeith Country Park, where we'd gone for breakfast. Very nice it was too, if a little on the 'light' size - should have just gone for the full job, rather than the Eggs Benedict.

Garden centre, walk in the park (where there were four Goldcrests mucking about), rugby, brother arriving, dinner, odd painting show on telly, brother and mum departing, weekend done.

*Belief presumably from the same school of thought that had Swallows hibernating at the bottom of rivers.
