Sunken Garden Sundial

While Mr and Miss Flum attended a lecture ("The Large Hadron Collider: Unveiling the Universe", given by Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director-General CERN, attended by  emeritus professor Peter Higgs himself) at Heriot-Watt I was free to take a leisurely wander around the campus, stopping to blip in the Sunken Garden.

RCAHMS describes this as a Sundial base consisting of six conjoined scrolled pillars with leaf decoration. Set on a double circular plinth. (I counted four pillars).  The horizontal sundial itself was removed to Somerset by a Mrs Sudlow when Riccarton House was demolished in 1956 so this is sadly lacking in the gnomon department (you'd think that a university renowned for its engineering faculties would have sorted that) but elegant nonetheless.

I also covered most of the the tree walk, the pond and a coffee in the refectory so filled the time nicely and was back at the car just before the Flum boffins returned.
