Not Our Usual Beach Walk

Only maybe fifteen minutes south of the path that we've worn in the sand over the years, for some reason today's beach trip seemed like a huge adventure to me. We had a plan, but to our surprise we found that two of the state parks were closed to vehicles because of storm damage; instead we parked up on the cliffs and found our way to the still intact staircase leading down to the sand. This is a view of the old recreation pier; way out at the end is a well-known landmark, The Cement Ship, now the former Cement Ship. It cracked during the last onslaught and part of it sank. A former dance hall, the ship hasn't been open for years and years, but it was an icon for this part of the coast. We walked for a couple hours, shared a sandwich on the beach, and came home thoroughly exhausted and happily full of sun and fresh air.

Ah, but if we'd only been in Las Vegas we could have seen the Tenth Annual World Sign Spinning Championship, a competition for those folks who spin arrow-shaped signs at intersections to attract attention to malls and small businesses. More than a hundred spinners twirled, danced and strutted their most creative moves...who knew?
