Pallas Tunturi

Marvellous sunny day today, so we piled up to Pallas Tunturi 50 miles further north (68º).

Originally intending to walk the 3km 'tourist trail' - we were lured up the fells and ended up on the subsidiary peak of Pyhäkero ( 775m ). Splendid views on the way up, but obscured on the very top my wind blown snow.

The wind was a biting northerly that took the balmy temperatures of -5ºC down well into double figures. First the SLR died - the cheap Chinese battery doesn't seem to be as impervious to cold as the Original Canon block*. Then the iPhone died too - a combination of cold, ViewRanger mapping and using the camera killed the battery it short order. A bit of warmth brought it back to life with 75% battery, but on the hill it was most unhappy. Of course, we were equipped with a conventional map and compass, so didn't go blundering off any precipitous edges. My spare battery was nice and warm in its charger, back at the cabin.
