Small Places

Work in progress

For our Saturday outing, Mrs P and I walked from Grandtully to Aberfeldy and back. We've occasionally seen small signs of beavers before, but here along the Tay approaching Aberfeldy they have clearly been busy.

It was interesting to see that they seem to be quite selective in felling; sometimes taking down the main stem but leaving side shoots as a sort of natural pollarding.

For those not from Britain, beavers here were hunted to extinction in the 16th century. There are some trial re-introductions in progress; on the Tay there was an illegal, or perhaps accidental, release and the beavers are re-establishing themselves without help.
