Almost 100 years separates...

.. these two shots, taken from approximately the same viewpoint.

The old photograph, of the corner of Prospect Crescent and Cambridge Street in Harrogate, was taken around 1925.

Since then, the Scala cinema has gone and it is over 25 years since the Market Hall and its clock tower (far left) were replaced by a shopping mall.

I enjoy taking these up-to-date photos to match those in the Library archives, but it is rarely as easy, as people imagine, to line them up.

The obstacles today included new(ish) street furniture (a small walled garden and trees) and having to lift the camera above head height (thank goodness for an articulated rear screen). It looks like the original photo was taken from an upper window of the bank across the road behind me.
