Plan B

My plan for today was to pop up to Grappenhall Heys walled garden and take some photos of the Runcorn model boat club who were putting on a display there. However we found out that the Tall Ships would be setting sail from Liverpool today.

We decided that instead of going to Liverpool we would head to Birkenhead and take some photos from there with the Liverpool skyline in the background. We turned up well before high tide to ensure that we got a good spec. There was light drizzle and the light was not very good. The river was quite busy with many different vessels coming and going.

The dock gates opened and the tall ships were released onto the river and headed a short way up river. Then accompanied by the Mersey Ferries, Daffodil and Iris, and the tug Brocklebank they turned around and headed for the open sea under sail.

We jumped into the car and headed for the mouth of the river at New Brighton. We found a place to park and made it just as the first of the ships appeared. There was a battery on Fort Perch Rock who fired a few salvos as the ships passed.

Some more shots in my Blipfolio.
