New gates

Repair of the first lock of Saimaa Canal at Mälkiä is progressing after three days of delay due of wind. The first gate was set in place last week and today they got second gate installed. One gate is 20 meters high, 8 meters wide, 1 meter thick and weight is 68 000 kilograms, therefore installation couldn't be done if the wind speed was more than 6 meters/second. Next step of project is to install hydraulics until 28.4.2017 when the maintenance break will end.

Unfortunately I was late today with my camera and I couldn't get an image when the gate was hanging in the air..Feeling a bit disappointed. I also blipped before when they were deconstructing old gates.
