The Obelisk

Visited a friend who showed me round Camberley in Surrey.  One it its tourist attractions is the "Obelisk", a tower of unknown purpose built in the late 1700s when Camberley did not exist.  The town came into existence after the Royal Military Academy  now called Sandhurst College was built in 1812 . During the 19th century cadets from the military college were required to climb up the hill to the tower as part of their surveying exercises, and the inner and outer walls of the tower are covered with names and army related graffiti  carved into the bricks by cadets  It is very likely that a lot of the names are also on the war memorial in the town.  Extra is the obelisk itself a shadow of its original; built at 30m but only 9m high now.
