Well labelled moth

I've finally got around to switching on my moth trap and this morning I found two moths, beautifully marked with their own name - the Hebrew Character. This moth, Orthosia gothica, is just about the commonest moth to be found in March/April, but no less welcome for this. The common name clearly derives from the dark mark on each wing that is said to resemble the character Nun in the Hebrew alphabet. I discovered that the Dutch are a little more prosaic, calling this moth Nunvlinder.
