Homeward bound

Finally the time had come but turned in to another skiing nightmare for me.

Luggage returned to Oberstdorf via a supplies lift while humans only had the option of several hours foot march or ski. There were no people lifts. And a very thick fog came down. Goggle technology wasn't that advanced back then and seeing bumps ahead on the unprepared cross country route, impossible.

Luckily the snow ran out a few kilometres short of Oberstdorf and we were forced to heave the skis on to our shoulders along with rucksack of provisions and walk the rest of the way in very wet, very cold and very very heavy leather boots.

Reunited at the station with luggage we returned to Weinheim by train.

I will forever be grateful to Jochen for this wonderful experience, just one of many I had already had with him and there were many to follow. He is and always has been a figure I have looked up to, even though I never really know where to put him - an uncle yes but also at times a brother or a father figure. Whichever way,  it has always been as a treasured friend. Thank you Jochen.
