Life through the lens...

Postcard from Trebah.

A bright sunny morning, so we decided to visit another of our favourite gardens. Trebah on the Helford river.
We arrived just after the garden opened, at 10 am, and so had the place almost to ourselves.
Quiet, except for the bird song.
A beautiful view from the top of the valley down towards the beach.
Among the exotic palms and tree ferns was the splash of colour here and there, of rhododendrons camellias and magnolias.
The banks were covered in primroses and violets, and down near the lake the gunera was just beginning to flower and the huge leaves unfurl.

When we reached the beach the sea was very calm. Just the noise of  waves gently lapping the shore.
We always try to imagine what it would have been like in June 1944 when 7,500 men of the U.S. 29th Infantry Division embarked from this beach for the D-Day assault on Omaha Beach. So peaceful today.

A two hour walk round the gardens and we were ready for lunch.
They have a marvelous cafe here, overlooking the gardens.
A delicious homemade quiche for me and tomato and basil soup for Mr C.

After a look round the shop, where a few purchases were made. Including an Agapanthus , " Rosewarne".
Just had to buy it as my 5th grandfather, born in Breage, Cornwall,  was called Rosewarne.

The afternoon was spent down in the little fishing village of Cadgwith.
( see extra )
Forgotten by the 21st Century, fishermen still launch their boats by  pushing them down the beach, and haul them back with a cable.
Just as they have done for hundreds of years.
The catch isn't pilchards now, but mainly crab and lobster.
In the collage you can see the old Huer's Hut, up on the headland. From here they would spot the shoals of pilchards out in the bay.
The huer would then alert the village with cries of " Hevva, Hevva!" The village folk would drop everything to rush down to the harbour to launch the boats and prepare for to land the tons of fish.
You can still see the old fish sheds in the village.
On our way back to the car we were serenaded by the little robin, so had to include him in the collage.

Another fulfilling day, which was finished off back home with a delicious meal of local grilled lamb chops, various local vegetables, and a bottle of red wine.
Should sleep well!
