Thaipusam & Kek Lok Si

My parents and I visited the Blue Mansion in Georgetown before we met up with Sharon and got a taxi to visit the celebrations for the Hindu festival Thaipusam. A huge street was filled with thousands of people, music, dancing, food and some slightly disturbing rituals involving hooks through the skin of some people's backs.

In the evening we visited Kek Lok Si, a huge Chinese temple about half an hour away from Georgetown. Usually it's closed in the evenings but during Chinese New Year, it's open until late, meaning it's possible to see the temple lit up with thousands of lanterns. We didn't know what to expect but it was fantastic and we ended up staying for a couple of hours.
