Sue Foll's picture of the day

Where do all the old folk go?

Look around you in central London and you will see few people over 70. Urban life can be unforgiving to the fragile.

One place you will find the elderly living in comfort is in The Barbican. Seen in the background of my picture, it's not only an arts centre, but also has a lot of private and social housing.

To my mind, it's an example of a building nearer to the ideals of Swiss architect Le Corbusier, who believed 'a house is a machine for living in', it must serve it's function correctly. The Barbican apartments are well proportioned flats with good service facilities, open spaces and social centres. If ever there was an argument for high rise living, the Barbican would be part of that.
