Plymouth Congregational Church

A beautiful day again and a good day to shoot this. The red brick stands out against the blue sky.
In 1854 when Kansas Territory (before it was a state) was opened for settlement, many came from Massachusetts and were great abolitionists. Much blood was shed in the struggle to decide whether Kansas would be a free state or a slave state. The freestaters won out, greatly helped by Richard Cordley who became the pastor of this church. The first building was a mudbrick structure, often known as a hay tent, and this was followed by a stone building. Finally, the present brick structure was completed in 1870 (see extra). There have been additions but this is believed to be the first place of worship west of the  Mississipppi.
