There Must Be Magic

Green Boat

Summer is nearing its end, and with the end of summer comes the closing of some of the best swimming areas. Just a few weeks left, so we're trying to make the most of it! Saturday we went to one of my favorites, Whipple Dam. Here were a few of the highlights of our visit:

-Enjoying a refreshing swim in cool waters, with swarms of tiny neon blue dragonflies (or perhaps damselflies) everywhere above our heads!

-Encountering a beautiful little snake, an eastern rat snake that was almost two feet long, hunting along the shoreline; it flicked its pointy, black tongue in my general direction, then disappeared into the tall grass.

-Watching people scoot across the lake in colorful canoes.

-Spotting dragonflies engaged in some pretty amazing acrobatics and late-summer flings.

-Spying some huge, bright orange fungi near the base of a tree (of course the crittergators had to play on it!).

In just two more weeks, this swimming area will close for good. Maybe we'll make it back once or even twice more before the season ends . . .
