Widow Iris

Something a little different.  Iris tuberosa, formerly known as Hermodactylus tuberosus, also known as Widow Iris, Snakes's Head Iris and Black iris, is a tuberous bulb form the Mediterranean region.  It grows best in full sun to partial shade, and requires well-drained soil. In can naturalise in grassy areas but grows well in rock gardens or containers.  It has a reputation for being a little tender in the UK but these are growing in a raised bed out in the garden here.

A day of phone calls, food, gardening and allotment.  Happy with that :-)
