Eventually computer person phoned from Ireland - only 3 hours later than arranged.
Has talked me through some complicated procedures which he said MAY work. Computer eventually agreed (to obvious surprise of Apple person) to start reinstalling its operating system. Told it would take about 90 minutes; 6 hours later and still waiting . . .
