guarding the sunflower

I thought this was a dead leaf on this sprouting sunflower and I almost tried to swipe it off. I can't begin to tell you how much this picture scares me. I have a fear of big, harry spiders. (I don't mind the tiny ones)

why am I blipping this? I have no idea...nor do I know what kind this is. Do you?
