The Old Forge (Monday 3rd April 2017)

Ideally I would have taken this on a Thursday for the abstract challenge. Unfortunately I noticed the strong sunlight creating the textures and shadows on Monday (although I am posting it on a Thursday!). I didn't photograph anything else.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Shangri-Las - Heaven Only Knows (recorded 1965, Mira Sound Studios, New York NY)
Heard on 6 Music this day, played by Radcliffe and Maconie. This was on a single that I bought at the time. I loved all the girl groups, and Greenwich/Barry compositions. The song was first recorded by Ray Petersen in 1963.
"Heaven Only Knows is the flip side to The Shangri-Las hit Give Us Your Blessings (Red Bird 10-0030). This is another fine composition from Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, who were writing hit songs for so many of the girl groups in 1963-65. The Shangri-Las were composed of 2 sets of sisters: Mary and Betty Weiss, and Marge and Mary Ann Ganser (who were twins). The girls found their greatest success with teen melodrama songs, many having death as part of the outcome of the song. While Mary and Betty are still alive, Mary Ann died tragically at the young age of 22, and Marge died of breast cancer in 1996 at age 48.
"The girls had (whether they consciously meant to or not) cultivated a "bad girl" image, through their music and leather outfits. They contrasted with the other "sweet" girl groups of the era, and were cited as an influence on 1970 punk rock era acts such as The New York Dolls, Blondie, and The Go-Go's. Heaven Only Knows is one of their more "upbeat" songs since it does not contain any element of tragedy (only love). Produced by George "Shadow" Morton." - Michael McKenna, You Tube
