Friday

Is it too soon,
on a late afternoon,
to sail away to anywhere
but here?

Shouldn’t you wait
until later in the year
and then,
for a month or two,
just disappear?

The need to get away
can possess
at any time,
but particularly now
as the holiday season encroaches.

Your feet begin to itch.
You become sick of dry land
and sick
of just staring at the sea.

You want to be on it.
You need to be on it.

And, be honest,
you can’t stand
the hordes who descend
on a sunny weekend
and turn your home
(perish the thought!)
into a resort.

You bury your head in your hands.
‘Woe is me,’
you wail.

There’s nothing for it –
you really do need to buy a boat
and learn to sail.

Out Of The Sinking
