Show yourself Mr. Blackbird

I have been trying to photo my local blackbird but with great difficulty.  I find working with my tripod most frustrating.  I get all set up as best I can, aimed at his favourite spot and then the bird decides somewhere different to normal and of course it's just out of reach!!  
Can anyone recommend a user friendly tripod that doesn't cost an arm and leg?
