Hawks Crag

Yesterday we went off in the caravan to Carters Beach on the West Coast for the night as the weather was meant to be perfect.  Perfect it wasn't - yesterday rained and was cold, so we spent the day in the van relaxing.  And of course the day we go home, we woke to a fantastic day!

On the way home we stopped on the other side of Hawks Crag, a prominent landmark in the lower Buller Gorge, where the road has been excavated through a bluff that drops into the Buller River.  It's one lane, and you have to rely on mirrors on the side of the road to ensure no one is coming through in the opposite direction.  Today the Buller River was so still, making the reflections beautiful.

Interestingly enough, when the Buller River is in flood, the water can rise above the road, closing the highway to traffic.  It's quite magnificient to see.  Luckily it doesn't happen often.
