rocket post

Slow morning that started with another visit to the Abbey for some morning shots. Then wander into town for some shopping. We timed it so that we could watch the steam train arrive and leave again. In the afternoon we walked to Robin Hood's Bay. The walk was great, along the cliff top. In Robin Hood's Bay we went for a drink and a poke of chips. The hotel was something from the last century, but totally packed. We took the bus back to Whitby and enjoyed dinner at the youth hostel. In total we walked about 20km. Tired now.

Outside Robin Hood's Bay we came across rocket post field. We had ideas of a rocket mail service. It turned out slightly differently. The post was erected in memory of the sailors rescued by rocket: a rocket with a thin rope attached is fired towards the ship in distress. The sailors haul in a thicker rope and are transported back to shore by breeches buoy. We saw the system in the technical museum in Berlin. So it was quite cool to see it where it was used.
