Back-blip; Great Great Aunt Maria Clegg 1820 -1890

This is the lady who inspired my first novel Maria's Papers.
Single-handedly she took on a wealthy family in her pursuit to reclaim an estate that had been leased to them 100 years earlier in 1750, and about which they argued it had been sold to them. She fought them for 20 years until almost on the eve of her success, they paid to have her locked up in a mental asylum where she remained until she died.
In 2006 we obtained her medical records and saw that she had been institutionalised for having "Delusions of exaltation" - What?
She was allowed one medical exam per year, and for 18 of the 20 years that she was there, the annual report stated "Condition unchanged"
What a travesty! And that's why I wrote the novel, to tell her story.
