up Pompeij

Visited the city of Pompeij today, its amazing how you can walk around in a place where time stood still nearly 2000 years ago when the city was engulfed in volcanic ash and seized to exist. Although we can walk around their homes, restaurants and bath houses and the very street the people from long ago walked we cannot really put ourselves in their shoes. What is missing is the noise, the smells and the very different culture and mentality these people lived under.
And the sadness of their sudden death with their bodies frozen, shielding themselves from the choking hot ash. I found it a bit morbid and disrespectful when tourists crowded round the plastercasts of the dying to take photos to post on social media. What would people in roman times made of this?
The bronze statue is a modern one, an exhibition of a polish artist which is displayed all around Pompeij at the moment.
