Sally Mair - Loving life

Lauriston Castle

This is the main pond at Lauriston Castle, where we went for a walk this afternoon. The pond is full of colour just now with lots of marsh marigolds and some flowers I had never seen before which are a bit like Lords and Ladies but water plants. The flower is 6-8" long, with a central green stamen. They are quite exotic and there are both yellow and white varieties. They go by the less than exotic name of American skunk cabbage! They are described as non -invasive, but areas such as the Cairngorms find then threatening native species. I'd never seen them before. They are a type of Arum and grow in the water. Nice to see something new.
And apparently, yes, they do smell, like their namesakes!
