To Hand Pick the Chick

Every year I take a picture like this, and every year it reminds me of another time.

Every year Spring rolled around, the employees at our Post Office waited for THAT day. The day when you let yourself in the side door...and you heard THE sound. The sound of baby chicks cheeping. I would bend back a corner of the box, take out a tiny chick, and nuzzle it up against my cheek. That was the sign...SPRING IS HERE! SPRING IS HERE!

The little hands checking out the chicks did not get to buy any babies (they had too many at home), but her big sister (age 12) did get to buy two baby ducks...one dark one, and one light one.

Isn't it great that we have little triggers that touch off memories? (Especially when the triggers are soft little bundles of fur.)
