The Merchant's House, Brechin

This building, known as the Merchant's House, is thought to be one of the oldest (if not the oldest) in the cathedral city of Brechin. It was built in 1575 although some of the wood used in the rafters has been dated as 1470. The house lay in a state of disrepair for nearly 50 years until a regeneration project was undertaken. Many of the original features of the house have been retained and the outside, including the re instatement of a gable , has been restored. Internally key features of the roof structure have been opened up and restored.
The house is now 2 residences and was today open for view as part of the Open Doors initiative.
My interest in the house is that my grandmother was its last inhabitant and my father and grandfather ran a hairdressing business from the ground floor of the building from the 1930s until the late50s /early 60s.
It is quite remarkable what has been achieved with this building.
