A Dog's Dinner

Dark Ages

Back to dreich weather today. It's barely got light, well maybe for a few hours in the morning, but for most of the day it's been damp, dark and miserable.

Imagine living here in the old days, no light, no wellington boots, a smoke fire - it must have been hard. If fact I can't image living here at all, yet there were large populations in these glens until The Clearances. My goodness they must have been very self contained, tough folk.

Boswell and Johnson describe the Glen when they passed through in 1773, basically it was cold, wet and very poor. They let some of the locals, 'much the same as being with a tribe of Indians', try wheat bread, which they had never eaten and gave them a taste of snuff.

Changed days.
