Musee du Mur De L'Atlantique

Thursday 27th April 2017 (1706)

A relaxing day with a gentle tour down the coast road. First stop the monument to Hubert Lathom, who, in 1909, made two flight attempts across the channel. Next the obelisk of the Dover Patrol monument of Cap Blanc Nez. With blue sky and sun the view along the coast was glorious, despite the icy wind.

On to this museum. The battery is placed to the south of Gris Nez and was commissioned in 1942. It was able to fire shells that could easily reach the coast of England, focused on Folkestone and Dover. It sent a shiver down my spine when Mum said that Dad had been stationed at Dover and talked about the shells coming over, they could have been fired from this point.

We had our picnic at Cap Gris Nez before taking a walk across the cliffs. It was so peaceful and the birds were singing and flying around us, yet we could also see evidence of the concrete bunkers of the war.

Our drive continued down the coast to Wimereux when we then decided it was time to turn around and head home for an early rest.
