All about DW

The day of the funeral, so after a slow start, we made our way to Warriston - a fine warm day once you were out the wind. And it was fine service - Perry Como and Harry Belafonte brought a tear to the eye and P did an excellent speech summarising very warmly the old man’s life. A revelation - DW played for Duns FC in the late 40s and early 50s! They kept that quiet.  This included the famous 3-1 defeat handed out to Forres Mechanics in 1951 in the Scottish Cup. “Following a Walters corner the ball reached Mitchell who drove it past a mass of players into the net …. Hats were in the air and there was no holding the home supporters.”
The next round they were drawn away to Celtic - 22907 spectators saw Celtic win 4-0. “That they showed a deficit of two goals at the interval was due chiefly to Spiers and Walters failing to snatch up obvious net-finders.” Oh well.
There was also a home game against Aberdeen (0-8) which recorded, “Douglas Walters, inside left, also from Edinburgh, works in “The Scotsman” office and on the football field is a real plodder without being brilliant.” A plodder? I can only assume, in a good way.
So, that was that; back to the Victoria to meet some old stalwarts from Leith Accies RFC, and then a stroll out on the breakwater.
