The Oehoe valley

A beautiful part of the Enci quarry on the St. Pieter Mountain.

The ENCI quarry is now a combination of activity on the one hand and nature development on the other. In 2018, the complete marl winning in the ENCI quarry will stop. It has been won for almost 100 years. The area is largely managed by Nature Monuments.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the first cement factory was put down by the Dutch Company of First Dutch Cement Industry, from which the name ENCI-quarry originates. In the decades that follow, production is expanding, in 1948 it was agreed that the limestone quarry could continue for 60 years.

Mergel and fossils
The lime from the quarry is an important raw material for cement production. With the growth of marl winning, the ENCI quarry became of great value for the labor market in the vicinity of Maastricht.

Later the historical value was discovered. Large numbers of fossils were found in the quarry, including those of Mosasaurussen Bèr, Carlo and Lars.
