Open Wide - Abstract Thursday

Apparently almost any any animal can be trained.  The Dubbo zoo hippo keeper explained that hippos in captivity need regular dental treatment to stop their bottom teeth from growing so long as to pierce the upper jaw.   Sedating the animal is the last resort option because sedating hippos is fatal about 30% of the time.  The answer is they've trained this guy to come up to three-bar steel gate and rest his lower jaw on the middle bar with his upper jaw on the top one.  The keeper then goes to work with a rasp and keeps the teeth in order.  It was amazing to watch the demonstration.
