An Alentejano Story

So, got up early this morning and headed for Mora (where we used to live; about 2hrs away) for Mike to get his dental work finished. Got a call about halfway there that dentist was ill. We were near a town called Redondo, so decided to go in and look for some tostas (toasted cheese and ham sandwiches, which are available in any bar and always delicious) for breakfast.

Wandered down a cobbled street and stopped to watch this gentleman, Sr João Mértola, working on a St Francis. He invited us in to "look at the castle walls". Indeed, as we went to the back of his pottery, in the garden were steps to the top of the walls - we walked along - as usual, no guardrail or any other safety measures - just an amazing view over the town and surrounding countryside.

I bought the wine jug in his hand for 10 euros - definitely not made in a factory... so love these friendly, unassuming people.
