Camp 21

These are some of the many Nissen huts which make up what was known during World War 2 as Camp 21. It is now known as Cultybraggan Camp and it sits just outside the village of Comrie in Perthshire. Camp 21 housed up to 4,000 German Prisoners of War from 1941 until a few years after the war ended. It was subsequently used by the MoD and has now been acquired by the Comrie Development Trust. Several of the huts are listed by Historic Scotland. A few of us had a tour this evening with one of the volunteer guides. It is a strange and rather eerie place. A few local businesses have moved into some of the huts and there are plans to develop 10 as luxury self catering properties. It's great that the community owns it otherwise it would have been developed for housing I'm sure.

A couple of years ago a former Prisoner of War who'd been interred in Camp 21 as a very young man died back home in Germany. In recognition of the kind treatment he experienced during the war he left the community of Comrie £360,000.
