Tess

Tess Gallagher is a well-known American poet. She has written lovely and much-anthologised poems, such as Black Silk or Choices. Those two cooly descriptive ones remind me of the stories of Raymond Carver, whom she was married to.

As with the other poets, I wanted to take a more intimate portrait to compliment those standard podium shots which I was hired to do. She was wonderfully obliging and friendly, a delight to photograph. Those large, eyelined eyes remind me of the actress Giulietta Masina in Fellini's La Strada.
