Zebra farewell

Spotted these on the side of the road just outside Pretoria, on my way to the airport heading for home. Zebras are several species of African equids united by their distinctive black and white striped coats. Their stripes come in different patterns and differing shades of dark colouring, unique to each individual. Zebra foals are born with brown and white stripes as opposed to black and white stripes.

They are generally social animals that live in small harems to large herds. Generally inquisitive and will approach if they are not spooked in any way. They are closely related to horses and donkeys. The stripes are believed to be camouflage devices that help zebras hide well in the grass. The other fascinating fact is that they sleep standing up.
