A walk round Lake Bled, Slovenia (2 photos)

The village of Bled has been a tourist resort for longer than 150 years.  It lies at the foot of the Julian Alps, and close to Slovenia's highest mountain (Triglav, 2,864m.)  The village's main asset is a delightful lake with the feature of a small island at the top of which is a church: the Church of the Assumption.  It also has a picturesque medieval castle giving stunning views of the lake and mountains.

First Photo: gondolier and pletna

The island is accessible by pletna gondola (for tourists) and rowing boats can also be hired.  A typical pletna carries 16 passengers, and provides an awning for use when the weather is uncertain.

A pletna with blue awning can be seen at right, middle distance.  It is travelling close to the island, but this viewpoint enabled me only to capture a very small part of it.

Second Photo: Bled Island, Castle and mountains

This photo has the island and church in middle distance.  If you look closely you can distinguish island from the lake shore.

A walk round the lake may take you an hour or more; it is very straightforward and nearly all walkers met turned out to be tourists.  Plus the "zen experience" of a Japanese monk playing a flute on the bank of the lake!
