Garibaldi

Today we drove to Garibaldi Provincial Park where we hiked up through a beautiful forest from 600m to 1700m, having to use snowshoes from about 1200m. This took us about 200m above the frozen Garibaldi Lake (above). We'd hoped to get up Panorama Ridge (left) but, because there has been so much late snow, the avalanche risk was too high. We dropped back down to the lake and walked out onto it. There were amazing views of mountains and trees in all directions (see extra). On the way down we saw a couple of very tame birds (see extras). After passing Barrier Lake (see extra) we reached the Barrier itself (see extra). This is an amazing wall of crumbling rock (with almost continuous rockfall) which holds back the water of Barrier Lake and, one day, is expected to collapse with spectacular results!
