A Perfect Day Out

Our friends C and A suggested a day trip to Edison, a tiny* town in Skagit County, south of us, as we all had a hankering for fried oysters and The Old Edison has a reputation for excellent ones. (Check out Phil's blip for a sense of what this classic eatery is like.)

We lingered over our long lunch, and then strolled over to the Smith & Vallee Gallery to take in their Tenth Anniversary Show -- just in the nick of time, as it closes on June 28. The group show of more than 80 artists they've worked with in the past decade echoed the more than 80 shows that the gallery has staged.

I was mesmerized by these imaginative bronze jellyfish mobiles, created by David Eisenhour, and watched them slowly spin for quite a while, trying to absorb their myriad details.

An artist whom Phil knows had a lovely painting of a tranquil local scene in the show, and hearing our admiring comments, the gallery staffer brought out five more of his landscapes for us to view. One proved irresistible to both of us, and we purchased it. We don't give each other birthday or Christmas presents, but do occasionally make a joint purchase like this one that delights us both!

After putting the painting in A and C's car, we purchased some goodies at the Breadfarm , cocoa nib shortbread and whiskey pecan shortbread among them.

One last stop, at the Farm to Market Bakery for coffee drinks and a shared outstanding brownie, and a few more treats to take home, including my favorite Lime-Soaked Polenta Cake, wrapped up our excellent day together.
