Hate Crime Victim Vigil

The story is here

Thousands of people contributed flowers and candles, left letters, made signs. A mass vigil was held.

The extra gives you some idea of the crowd at 6:30 when the vigil began.

Maybe tomorrow I will say more about Chris Hedges and about the collaboration between social justice activists and the Portland Art Museum that also happened today.

For now, I leave you with shadows, flowers, candles and letters to three men, two of them murdered and one still fighting for his life. They were three very different men, aged 53, 23, and 21. They didn't know each other. They all tried to defend two Muslim girls, ages 16 and 17, being threatened and attacked by a white supremacist who had tweeted: "If Donald Trump is the new Hitler, then I'm joining his SS."

Update: Seventy-five incredibly beautiful photographs of the vigil by Portland's finest photojournalist, Beth Nakamura.
