If you can't beat them...

Male Great Spotted Woodpecker.

A day mainly round home.   I had almost forgotten I had a 2X convertor which fitted the K30, so having remembered about it I decided to have a play.  The Woodpecker proved a good model.  In other years the slightest movement has scared them away.  This male however doesn't mind movement seen through the living room window.

Unfortunately one of the disadvantages of the convertor is the loss of two stops exposure.   This meant I had to use a high ISO resulting in some noise in the shot.  The up side is the ability to see detail not clear in shots with the 300mm.   For example this male has signs of the hard work the beak does looking for hidden food, drumming on trees in the breeding season and of course excavating nest holes in trees.
